Description:
This position is one of four Director roles within Business Actuarial, Group Benefits (GB). Business Actuarial's mandate is to monitor, assess, and proactively respond to the emerging financial health of Group Benefits. Business Actuarial acts as the point of contact into Group Finance for business related activities and acts in partnership with other functions to drive appropriate financial decisions.
The Director, Business Actuarial is fundamental to the Planning process and ongoing forecasting. Using detailed planning models requiring a solid actuarial understanding of Group profit dynamics the incumbent drives the financial planning process throughout the year from Preliminary Plan to Final Plan and provides substantial input into potential strategic and shorter term initiatives. Coordinating with Financial Management leaders within Business Actuarial, the incumbent ensures continuous forecasting and regularly updates the VP, Financial Management, GB and VP, Finance, GB of the emerging financial picture. Solid explanations of past performance through detailed source of earnings are also required.
A key component of the job is to execute certain income initiatives consistent with Group's profit drivers. For example, the incumbent will be Group Finance's Asset Management's representative charged with helping ALM improve Group Benefit's investment returns and would also be responsible for articulating and driving toward more advantageous crediting rates in partnership with Underwriting.
The incumbent will be assigned various Finance projects that will be varied in nature and some quite technical. In some cases these may be consulting assignments for other Group divisions that will expose the incumbent to other Group challenges.

Main Accountabilities:
Planning:
* Accountable for the entire Planning model including forecasting. Provides insight into initiatives through relevant scenario testing. Challenges input from other divisions when appropriate. Ensures VP (Vice President), Financial Management, GB (Group Benefits) and VP, Finance, GB have the most to date and relevant information with key assumptions.
Asset Liability Management (ALM):
* Represents Group Finance on the ALM Working Group. Provides liability updates and works with ALM on projects that further Group Benefit's investment returns.
Income Initiatives:
* Works with the VP, Financial Management, GB to drive execution of income initiatives to ensure ongoing health of the business. Works with Underwriting and Business Development to achieve set Finance goals.
Financial Consulting and Project Work:
* Assists other GB functions requiring Finance related assistance as required. Drives Finance projects as assigned.
Competencies:
Incumbent must meet the following requirements:
* FCIA designation or awaiting designation (i.e. completed designation requirements)
* Strong technical, analytical and problem solving skills that allows for deep actuarial analysis
* Solid communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation skills) with the ability to explain complex ideas to non actuaries
* Good multitasking abilities
* Excellent people skills is required to manage relationships with other GB functions
